Finding meaning amidst the fun
November 14th, 2006 by SaundersIf asked “Why do you play roleplaying games?”, I think most of us would quickly answer “Because they’re fun.” And rightly so. You get to spend a few hours socializing with good friends; you engage in an activity that’s both creative and interactive; you enjoy the catharsis of either the dice-rolling mechanics of combat or the exploration of a fictional character’s point of view, depending on your particular style of game play. Good fun, much like getting together with friends to play a particularly complex board game.
I’m going to make the argument that roleplaying games can be more than that.
