    The Legend of CubeHead

    April 30th, 2007 by orcdoubleax

In order to uncover the legend of Cubehead we must search out the other PC that knew the Gelatinous Wonder during his early adventures. The first known contact with Cubehead was by a surly dwarf in the town of Diamond Lake. We tracked down this Kalior a short time ago as he prepared for the champion’s games. Here is what he says about Cubes.

Thoughts From The Games Room 6.0

    March 6th, 2007 by orcdoubleax

After a brief holiday hiatus, I’m back.

Yes I know it is March, but really three months is a brief period of time in the grand scheme of things.

Today’s column was going to be about some monsters that I have had good success with in the past. As I started to write I decided to change it a bit and put the spotlight on one monster in particular. A wonderful little Halfling sized demon called the Jovoc.

The Jovoc is only a Challenge rating 5, but it is deceivingly dangerous especially against characters that don’t know what they are fighting. On the surface you have a fairly basic small 4 hd Tanar’ri, but the Jovoc has a nasty little surprise. The Jovoc’s Aura of retribution turns the party’s offence against them.

Thoughts from the Games Room 5.0

    November 29th, 2006 by orcdoubleax

Again I am late. It is starting to become a habit. I do have a really good excuse. You see there was this beholder, ok not a real beholder, it was more of a beholder-kin and these two, no make that three, drow. Of course they were after this ancient artefact – did I mention the black half-dragon ettin? Anyway you had to be there. Trust me it is a really good excuse.

Today’s “Thoughts from the Game Room” is by request from Bonelock. How can you be a good player from the viewpoint of a DM? This is a more what-not-to-do then what-to-do situation. Just like there are seven deadly sins there are seven annoying sins that can be deadly to your character.

Thoughts from the Games Room 4.0

    November 20th, 2006 by orcdoubleax

Greetings once again from the games room. For the first time in a long time I had a weekend that was not booked solid with work or gaming activities. In fact the only thing I had to do this weekend was finish sorting and storing my blood war minis. This brings up the question of what is a gamer to do when he has a weekend with out a game? Why do prep work of course.  So took the weekend as an opportunity to do some prep work for the next “Shield of the North” session.

In the course of my prep work I needed the stats of a specific creature, but I could not remember which book it was in. I finally found the creature after scouring 4 monster manuals, the Fiend Folio, the Book of Vile Darkness, and Heroes of Horror. This got me to thinking. How many creatures are there anyway? Well after a quickly aborted attempt at tallying all the monsters in the sources books on my bookcase I decide that was a question I wasn’t going to have an answer to. So instead I started to think about all the cool creatures I have never used.

Thoughts from the games room 3.0

    November 13th, 2006 by orcdoubleax

I am a little late this week. Sunday was our very successful Blood Wars sealed tournament, and it has delayed me writing this. The server was also down for upgrades for a good portion of Sunday. So excuses aside here is my slightly late thoughts from the game room. I promise I am not going to become like the goblins web comic.

I still have one small problem I have no idea what to write about. I guess I will take a look around the games room for inspiration. There are still a ton of Blood Wars minis to be sorted an put away as well as some very nice tiles from game day. My work table is coveried in some maps for use in the next Shield of the North session. All the source books are on the shelf. All that is except one. Unearthed Arcana is lying out by itself. I don’t remember why, but I assume I was looking up an alternate rule. That got me to thinking about something.

Thoughts From the Game Room 2.0

    November 5th, 2006 by orcdoubleax

It has been one crazy week. Work has been beyond hectic, Blood Wars was released and The Silver Dragons pulled victory from the jaws of what was looking like a TPK.

I was really glad about that last one. Usually I don’t mind dying; in fact I likely have more dead characters then anyone I know. I have even had the unusual honour of dying twice in the same session once. (Thanks James) But when the cult of Vecna was putting the hurt on the party it made me realize how attached to Count Thomas Cooperson I have become.

Thoughts from the Games Room 1.0

    October 29th, 2006 by orcdoubleax

Here I am posting to the front page without permission. It’s not my fault; the fools gave me a password. They should know better.

So it is Sunday night and time for my first “Thoughts from the Games Room”. I am trying to keep my cat off the keyboard as I write this. It is kind of annoying. It not that Merlin is a bad cat; he just wants more attention than I am showing him.

That reminds me of D&D, of course most things remind me of D&D. Specifically how do you as a DM balance your attention between a diverse group of players. All players, like cats, need attention during a game. It is one thing to throw out catch phrases like “make sure everyone is involved in the game” “give everyone a moment to shine” or “make every character feel important”, but the reality is that it is not always easy to do that. With 3.5 combats sometimes taking 2 hours there is less and less time to get everyone involved in a meaningful way in every session.

So what is a busy DM to do?
