So, the capstone adventure of the Kingmaker adventure path is officially an adrenalin-fueled acid trip compared to the first 5 portions.
After a gritty exploration / kingdom building / political intrigue / backstabbing / mass combat series of events, things go a little haywire with:
a four-armed frost giant barbarian 8
an awakened advanced nightmare roc
a pair of gargantuan winged owlbears
six (!) advanced purple worms
a huge black dragon
a tarn linnorm (only gargantuan since it's a "runt")
a worm-that-walks transmuter 17
a pair of gargantuan barbtongued wyverns
a saurian medusa sorcerer 12
a lesser jabberwock complete with claws that catch, eyes that burn, whiffling and burbling (DR 15/vorpal anyone?)
and the evil insane nymph queen who rules them
Did I mention that they come crashing into the material plane from the First World in the middle of their new kingdom? Good times. |

I have not read ahead past #3 yet, maybe I should...
I may have to magic down those encounters when I run them. Do you think you are going to go that route, or play it out as written. |

I'm playing it as written. There are a couple things the PCs can do to bring some of these encounters into the realm of "defeatable" if they pull that portion of the First World into the material plane. Nyrissa, in particular, though CR20 will actually be a pretty easy fight if she's fatigued, shaken, confused every 1d4 rounds and making DC35 concentration checks to cast spells.
There's also the fact that Briar comes to full power as a +5 vorpal sword which grants SR30 against her spells. It also provides barkskin, blight and true resurrection. Of course, her "immunity" to decapitation helps even though it's a one shot thing. The players don't know that though...
I think I'm most worried about the wriggling man since greater invisibility, timestop and summon monster IX makes a tough combination to face when you're only level 15.
My players plan on crafting all sorts of things so I expect them to be pimped out pretty well by the time they get here. They've already made special arrangements to have the lonely warrior's bastard sword repaired. That thing will be useful (with some upgrades) right through to the end of the campaign.
I wonder if they'll try to craft any other vorpal weapons. Typically, it costs too much for what it does but they are particularly useful in this adventure. Of course, they won't exactly know that until it's too late. They certainly have enough time to make them and without the required spells, it's a DC 33 to make. Our sorcerer has a 16 Int IIRC, so with skill focus (spellcraft) at level 11 he would have a +23 and could make them taking 10s. I guess money will be the biggest factor. |

Hmm - that is odd. I didn't get any email notifications this time around, they just both appeared. It's probably because I'm picking them up at Gencon.
I'm finding that SS isn't grabbing me the same way that Kingmaker did though it's probably because I'm so engrossed in the latter at the moment.
I'm getting a couple DDM minis repainted to suit the adventures. In particular:
A couple cyclopes as zombies
The Ettin Spirit Talker as a troll
A wyvern (since the paint job on the DoD one sucks)
A Cleric of Sune as the dancing lady
I also recently won an Oni repaint that will fit nicely as Irovetti's general from book 5.
I may take some photos once they've encountered them to post here. |
