Chapter 7: The Lost Mine of Phandelver

Postby wineandcheese » Thu Aug 13, 2015 3:25 pm

Gundren holds his map close as the party heads south.
He offers the characters his thanks and asks that they
escort him back to Phandalin and then venture to
Wave Echo Cave to learn the fate of his brothers,
Nundro and Tharden. He knows that someone called
the Black Spider orchestrated his capture and hopes
that the characters stop this villain who seems hell
bent on waylaying his progress towards the re-opening
the mine.

Last he heard, Nundro and Tharden were at the mine
safe guarding the newly opened tunnels while Gundren
went for supplies and reinforcements. He worries how
they have made out now that his supply run is sorely
overdue. He assures the party that if they can escort
him to Phandalin for new supplies and then take him
to the mine that he will share with them the spoils of
his operation.

The party heads south past the town limits,
coming to a stop near a bubbling brook. The
path leads along the water side giving a good
line of sight from east to west. Several large
stones provide easy passage across the gently
flowing water.

"The trees along the bank should give us
some cover in case that dragon comes looking
for us." Gundren says nervously, "Still doesn't
do much to put me at ease. I assume they have
a keen sense of smell."

"What are we going to do if that thing does
come after us?" Belderan asks, "My spells and
crossbow bolts can only reach so far. "

"Are green dragons nocturnal? Maybe we should
take a small break and then travel under the
cloak of darkness?" Winch adds.

Mehesh smells the water and checks it for clarity before refilling his waterskin, taking a long thirst quenching drink, then refilling it again, and stowing it his bag.

"It doesn't much matter to me where we go. I don't know much about the surrounding area or dragons, so I will do whatever the party thinks is best."

Winch and Maul share what they know of green dragons with the party;

"All I know is that they are thoroughly evil bastards! Green dragons
delight in subverting and corrupting the good-hearted." Winch
recollects, "And they prefer to dwell in or near ancient forests."

"I have heard of them spraying a whole army with a dense cone of
chlorine gas over fifty feet wide. Killed hundreds with one pass."
Maul adds, "They can see very well in the dark and prefer hunting
at night, so traveling under darkness won't help us."

"Before we leave, I'd like to go back to retrieve that family heirloom
so that we can return it to the woman in Phandalin." Winch states.

Mehesh remains silent while the party deliberates. Munching on a bite of rations and washing it down with water from the brook.

Winch stands up and turns to his friends;
"I say we go back, grab the heirloom and hide out in the west part of town for a rest. I fear that our transaction with the cult will be sparkin' some, er, animosity towards us... What with the possibility of that dragon comin' after us, once the cultists gather enough courage to tell their master what happened. I fear we might lead the dragon back to Phandalin. We cannot risk that, far too many lives at stake."

"We should rest as soon as possible," Belderan says keeping an eye on Mauls wounded leg, "No more exerting yourself Maul, you are weak and need time to heal. All this running around has kept the wound fresh."

"I sure would rather sleep under a roof tonight." Gundren postulates while looking up at the slowly darkening cloudy sky. "That alehouse had a stone roof. We ought to be safe from the dragon in there. The cultists are weak, Mehesh has shown them it is best not to interfere with us."

It is mid afternoon. Tree cover protects the party from a light rain.
The brook runs along the southern edge of the ruins of Thundertree.

The party decides to head back into town to retrieve the heirloom.
Heading west along the brook, they take the long way around town,
entering Thundertree from the same point the party had entered
the town earlier today.

Walking along the familiar paths, the party returns to the alehouse.
From there gundren and Belderan setup camp within the stone walls
While Winch, Maul and Mehesh head out to search for the heirloom.

The sky slowly darkens, all is quiet and there is no sign of activity.

"Had anyone spotted the alchemy shop during our last pass through
the town?" Winch asks of the group.

Maul and Mehesh shake thier heads.

"It must be one of the houses we haven't searched yet." Winch adds,
"Let's go!"

Once they arrive back at the alehouse, Gundren and Belderan get to work sealing off the windows and doors with debris from inside the building. Flagstones fill the window frames before timber is stacked to fill in the gaps.

Meanwhile, Winch and Maul follow Mehesh as he scampers from building to building in search of Mirna's alchemy and herb shop.

Mehesh slinks along the edge of the trail quietly, keeping his eyes peeled for danger.
As he rounds the corner near the 15th building, the first thing he spots is that the body of the cultist he killed in the town square has been taken away. There is a large pool of blood at the base of the hill, then a small trail of drips which leads south east. There are no drag marks, so it looks like the body was carried away by a group of men, presumably the cultists.

Mehesh investigates the fifteenth building, finding it empty and in ruins.

Doubling back, The swift thief darts south to buildings eight and nine.

The ninth building appears to be a shop, located across the street from an old smithy.
The thief's interest is immediately piqued in the shop and he goes over to investigate.

Inside, the ruined shop is cluttered with sagging storage shelves and broken furniture.
Shards of glass and pieces of pottery glint in the weeds and rubble next to rotted books
and casks.

Mehesh looks under the floor boards in the back of the shop, as instructed by Mirna.
A brief search reveals a small, mouldy wooden box. The case is worthless, but it contains
a gold necklace embedded with a fine emerald pendant. Mehesh guesses its worth to be
in the hundreds of gold coins.

Returning to the fork in the road where Maul and Winch lie hidden, waiting for a call to
action, The thief flashes a brief smile and a nod before heading back to the ale house
with Mirna's heirloom tucked tightly into his jacket pocket.

Back at the Ale house the three men are surprised to see that Gundren has carved a makeshift
door out reclaimed wood from the bar. Thick, yet rusty scraps of metal reinforce the wooden
door, making the alehouse as secure as could be made.

Inside, everyone helps to clear out an area in the kitchen where the hogs can be kept indoors, but separated from the party. Belderan covers his mouth while he drags the dusty zombie remains outdoors. The main bar area is made into camp. With cleared floors and stoned in windows, every one can stay close together, with only one man having to keep watch at any given time.

The group settles in, peeling off blood soaked armour and putrid sweaty clothing. They use some of thier water supply to cleanse themselves and their clothing before feeding on the few rations that are left. There's only a few days worth of rations available for everyone, but Maul assures the party that he can find meat easily enough if given half the chance.

After tending to their weapons and armour, the party collapses from exhaustion. Winch offers himself up to take first watch, despite his heavy eyelids. He does battle with each blink, remaining vigilant throughout the night. He listens intently for any sound or ill omen. Thankfully the only sounds he heard turned out to be nothing, maybe they were only in his head? Once Belderan wakes himself from meditation, he takes over watch and the little hero gets a much needed chance to rest.

Come morning, Gundren is squinting his eyes, looking out through the cracks in between the stones blocking the windows.

"No Dragons, nor Cenobites!" Gundren announces while skipping from window to window. "The coast is clear!"

Long Rest!

All hp and hit dice recovered!
All abilities requiring a long rest are now activated!
Belderans spellbook is studied and memorized.

Mehesh stretches and stands up, wrapping his blanket around his neck like a large scarf.

"So, Phandalin is it?"

He shoulders his pack and makes ready to travel.

Maul stands up, stretches then makes his way outside to relieve himself . As he does he takes a walk around the building to see if there was any activity throughout the night. Cultist or otherwise.

As Maul investigates outside of the building while the party gathers thier belongings, everyone else discusses whether they should beat a trail straight to Phandalin, or stop by Neverwinter for supplies. The one thing everyone agrees on is that supplies are low, and that Neverwinter could provide much needed items to aid in their journey.

"Well as much as I'd like to head straight to the mine," Gundren says "I have to agree with the concensus that we need supplies. We wouldn't be much use to my brothers if we arrive weak and hungry. A short shopping trip through Neverwinter shouldn't waylay us for too long."

"We would be able to get horses too. That'll sure speed things up." Offers Mehesh.

"Get supplies and rest a night in a real bed, then ride hard to Phandalin. Exchange the horses for fresh ones, continue on, and save those brothers of yours."

"And make a tidy profit while we're at it, I'll wager."

Once the hogs are packed, the party heads out along the river heading west towards Neverwinter. Keeping a steady pace, the party makes decent progress before taking a break along a bend in the river. Gundren and Winch decide that this location would make a decent camp site and begin setting up for the night. Mehesh catches up after being satisfied that no man or beast has been tracking the party. A few hours later, as Winch and Gundren begin chewing on old bits of jerky from the last of their provisions, Maul arrives at camp with a large deer draped across his massive shoulders. The party cheers in joy at the thought of having a decent meal a day earlier than expected. Mehesh sharpens his dagger before helping skin the animal, preparing it for cooking.

After enjoying the delicious meal of tender deer meat, The party is full and in good spirits. The sun finally drops beneath the horizon, signalling the end to a long day of marching. Mehesh brings up the idea of buying horses in Neverwinter to speed up their journey to Phandalin. The rest of the wary travelers agree while massaging thier sore and tired feet.

Winch take first watch yet again as the party begins to drift off into sleep.
Hours later, he is just about to wake Belderan for his shift, when his pipe begins to float out of his pocket.
"What in the dickens?" Winch exclaims while he watches the pipe float through the air in front of him. He snatches the pipe and notices that his bag has been opened and items are beginning to float away while a sparking light can be seen dancing over the camp site.

"Wake up!" The hero calls out, "Something is afoot!"

The party members awake to a dimly lit scene, where sparking dust appears to shimmer in the glow of the moonlight above the camp. Each member of the party notices several items floating around as they rub their eyes as if in a dream.
